China’s refractory metal development and research started from the 1950s.
In 1953, Shanghai lighting factory produced China's first reel of tungsten wire with 0.18mm diameter. In 1956, Beijing electron tube factory built China's first complete tungsten, molybdenum processing workshop.
From 1952 to 1960, Nonferrous Metal Research Institute, China Institute of Metal Research Institute, Ministry of Metallurgical Iron and Steel Research Institute, Shanghai Research Institute of nonferrous metals successively set up refractory metals research institutions. These refractory metal research institutes researched and developed tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, niobium, titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, rhenium and other refractory metals and established vacuum consumable arc furnace, vacuum vertical furnace, electron beam melting furnace and developed a variety of plate, belt, rod, wire processing materials made of refractory metals and alloys.
In 1958, Zhuzhou cemented carbide plant was founded and put into operation. It has gradually developed into an important production base of tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, niobium and hard alloy in China. In 1960s to 1970s, a number of refractory metal smelting and processing plants were built, such as Zigong hard alloy factory, Baoji nonferrous metal processing factory. These factories was equipped with a series of large smelting and processing equipments. A large number of new products were developed and manufactured, such as tungsten rocket nozzle, tungsten copper rocket nozzle, W-Re thermocouple, high density tungsten alloy, tungsten silver contact, tungsten copper contact, tungsten and molybdenum foil, large molybdenum alloy plate, tantalum tube with thin wall, zirconium alloy tube, titanium alloy tubes, and tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, niobium, zirconium, vanadium, titanium monocrystal, etc..
To 1980s, there are more than 40 institutes which were engaged in refractory metal materials research and production in China. A more complete scientific research and production system was formed and we can produce more than 100 kinds of refractory metals and alloys. Refractory metals and their alloys produced in the world, China basically can manufacture and trial-produce these refractory metals and their alloys. Refractory metal processing materials include sheet, strip, foil, pipe, bar, wire and powder products.
