Forging to Control Mechanical Properties
The forge shop on occasions may be requested to develop a prescribed amount of cold work in critical sections of a forging to develop the desired properties in a given component.
Although the strain hardening developed by cold working molybdenum increases the strength of the metal over a relatively wide temperature regime, the greater the amount of cold work the lower will be the recrystallization temperature. The recrystallization temperature limits the upper temperature level at which the properties of the forging can be fully utilized. It is necessary therefore to devise a forging schedule so that the sections of the final part which are to carry the highest stresses in service will receive enough cold work after the last recrystallization treatment to develop the required strength, but low enough to prevent the metal from recrystallizing in service.
The control of transverse properties may also be an objective of the forging operation. One contractor required high ductility in the transverse direction of a molybdenum part. The part could be machined directly from bar stock; however, the transverse ductility was not satisfactory for the application. By purchasing bar stock of a small diameter, then upset forging to specified reduction of height, the metal in the final part developed the desired tensile strength over the operating temperature range, and high ductility in the transverse direction.
