High Density Alloys
Tungsten-based alloys with small amounts of nickel-iron or nickel-copper binders have high densities similar to those of pure tungsten. These tungsten alloys are termed “High Density Alloys” and offer improved machinability compared with pure tungsten.

Metals with high densities are used in many engineering applications where high inertia forces are required. For example, high density alloys can be used as counterweights, gyroscope rotors, rotating inertia members, balancing weights, etc.

In addition to tis high density and high modulus of elasticity, high density alloys have good electrical and thermal conductivities. These properties make high density alloys a superior material for the anvil electrodes of hot heading machines (for example, for the hot heading of automobile valves, etc..)

Another field of application for high density alloys is based on the fact that the radiation shielding capability of a material is, in general, directly proportional to density, high density alloys are, therefore, effective shielding materials against gamma rays and X-rays.

High density alloys are excellent materials for damping torsional vibration. This properly, combined with its large Young’s modulus, makes high density alloys a highly recommended material for turning shanks, boring bars, grinding quills, pinion type cutter supports, etc..
