History of Tungsten
This article will introduce the history of tungsten.
In 1779, Peter Woulfe found the mineral and believed it must contain a new substance. Scheele, in 1781, discovered that a new acid could be made from tungsten. The de Elhuyar brothers succeeded in obtaining tungsten element by reduction the acid with charcoal. Tungsten exists in wolframite, scheelite,and ferberite.
In 1850s, people found tungsten has an influence to the properties of steel. However, production and wide application of tungsten steel is in late nineteenth century and early twentieth century.
At the Paris world exhibition in 1900, people displayed high speed steel for the first time. Therefore, tungsten extraction industry obtained the rapid development. This kind of steel marked significant technical progress in the metal cutting processing. Tungsten became one of the most important alloying element.
In 1900, Russian inventor А.Н.Ладыгин first proposed to use tungsten in lighting bulb. In 1909 Кулидж used pressure processing method based on powder metallurgy method, then tungsten had been widely applied in power vacuum technology.
In 1927~1928, hard alloy had been manufactured in which tungsten carbide is a main component. This is an important stage of tungsten development history. These hard alloys are better in various aspects of nature than the best tool steel and have been widely used in modern technology.
