Molybdenum Applications
Molybdenum and tungsten possess similar properties, such as high melting point, excellent electric conductivity, good thermal conductivity, low vapor pressure, etc. Because of these properties, molybdenum is widely used. Molybdenum applications are as follows:
Alloy steel, stainless steel, tool steel and cast iron are the main application areas of molybdenum. These steels’ production volume determines the demand of molybdenum. In iron and steel, roles of molybdenum as follows:
1.Molybdenum steel
Molybdenum is a special kind of steel alloy element. Molybdenum will not only bring its many good properties into steel, but also easily add these properties into molten metal. Adding molybdenum oxide and ferromolybdenum into steel can greatly reduce the melting loss.
2.Molybdenum application in carburizing steel
Molybdenum (0.15%~0.30%) was used in carburizing steel to improve the harden ability of low carbon part and increase the toughness of high carbon part at the same time. For large cross section components, such as gears, it is particularly effective.
3.High temperature steel
Compared to other alloy elements, molybdenum is a very effective enhancer and can improve the steel’s creep strength. Steel can be used in around 600 ℃. High temperature steel is widely used in petroleum refineries, power plants and petrochemical plant equipment.
There are other molybdenum applications.
