Chemical engineering
Although the corrosion resistance of niobium is nearly as good as that of tantalum, niobium is , by comparison, not used as much in chemical engineering. However, niobium has the advantage of lower density. Should niobium meet all requirements on corrosion resistance for a given application, it could be used instead of tantalum. Niobium has exceptional resistance to nitric acid, aqua regia, cold sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid and organic acids.
High temperature vacuum engineering
Because niobium has a high melting point and favourable high-temperature properties it is a useful material for high-temperature vacuum furnaces. Ti is therefore recommended as a material for high-temperature components such as radiation shields, heating elements, furnace parts, etc. Operating at temperatures up to 1600℃ (1873K).
Niobium can also be used as a getter to purify a closed vacuum system.
