Roskill outlined the historical development of tungsten market from the 1990s when most of western producers stoped tungsten production in the face of China’s tungsten oversupply and lower price. While, in 2000, the Chinese government began controlling tungsten exportation by the imposition of tungsten production and export quotas and removal of export rebates on tungsten products.
Roskill expects 2013 to be the tipping point when tungsten supply overtakes demand in the tungsten market. Tungsten prices are expected to ease between 2013 and 2015 as a bulk of planned new tungsten production is expected to enter the market. The demand for tungsten is expected to continue to grow to 2016 and beyond, which will put more pressure on tungsten suppliers.
