Wide applications of niobium and tantalum are as followings:

Niobium and tantalum can be applied as superconducting materials. The temperature of some chemical compounds and alloys of niobium and tantalum is higher than that of other materials when niobium and tantalum convert into the superconducting state.

Niobium and tantalum can be used to produce additives of all kinds of heat resisting alloys. These additives will significantly improve the properties of alloys. These heat resisting alloys are used to make jet engine and gas turbine. Carbide of niobium and tantalum are also constituent parts of tungsten carbide.

Most of niobium is used to produce all kinds of alloy steels. Niobium is able to eliminate the intercrystalline corrosion of stainless steel and prevent weld point breaking o if add niobium into nickel chromium stainless steel. Niobium is also the constituent of carbon steel, low alloy steel and low-carbon steel. Low alloy steel is mainly used to make gas pipeline and applied in automobile manufacture. Niobium is usually added into alloy steels as ferrocolumbium.

Niobium and tantalum also can be applied in atomic energy industry. Due to the thermal neutron capture cross of niobium is small, at the same time, niobium has high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance, so niobium can be used as protective cover of reactor heating element.
