Giving full recognition to the mechanical properties of molybdenum, techniques and procedures have been developed for fabricating sheet products by most of the conventional forming processes available in commercial shops.

Although molybdenum sheet can be fabricated by conventional processes, it must be recognized that the metal differs in mechanical properties from carbon and low alloy steels and from the austenitic stainless steels for which the conventional techniques and procedures have been established.

Molybdenum cannot be heat treated to develop its mechanical properties; therefore, it must be fabricated in the stress relieved condition. The final properties of the part are often those developed by the fabrication process. If the fabrication process is accompanied by extensive strain hardening the part may require stress relieving.

Concurrent with its high melting point and body-centered cubic crystal structure, molybdenum has a relatively high ductile-to-brittle transition temperature; accordingly, it also has a tendency to be strain rate sensitive and “notch sensitive” at room temperature. Control of metal temperature and rate of forming are necessary for effective fabrication. Attention must also be given to the removal of sharp edges and notches at the edges of blanks that are to be formed.
