Spinning affords fabricators an effective process for the production of cylindrical or conical shapes of molybdenum.
Spinning is versatile and can often be accomplished on a lathe. Molybdenum parts produced by spinning cover a wide range of sizes. Molybdenum sheet as thin as 0.125 mm has been spun to produce cups, cones, and crucibles. Spun molybdenum parts have been produced from molybdenum sheet of 3.5 mm *609 mm. Seamless cylinders with length-to-diameter ratios of 5:1 have been spun from molybdenum sheet.
The thinner gages of molybdenum sheet can often be spun at room temperature. It is usually advantageous, however, to heat the molybdenum sheet to 90-200 ℃ at the outset of a new campaign and gradually reduce the temperature to determine if it is feasible to perform the operation at room temperature. Increasing thickness of molybdenum sheet will require higher temperatures for satisffactory spinning. Infrared lamps will be sufficient for intermediate gages, but gas torches may be required for heavier plate.
Orders for molybdenum intended for spinning should indicate that the molybdenum sheet or molybdenum plate is “required for spinning operations.”
Special tubes, deep crucibles, and cone-shaped parts are sometimes produced by “hydrospinning”, “flotuming”, or “roll extrusion”. These processes exert very high unit pressures on the molybdenum sheet between a set of hydraulically loaded rollers and a turning mandrel.
