Molybdenum and TZM
Some industrial and military applications of molybdenum and TZM depend upon forging to produce the special shapes that are required.
Forging develops the strain hardening that determines the mechanical properties of the metal at temperatures below the recrystallization temperature. Upset forging serves to improve the transverse tensile properties of arc-cast unalloyed molybdenum and the TZM alloy. Localized hot upset forging in special machines can be used for economical utilization of the metal and to reduce the number of operations for producting a given part. The forging process, therefore, becomes an important step in the fabrication of many structural components of molybdenum and TZM. Forgings of conventional design are produced routinely from unalloyed molybdenum and TZM. Close-tolerance forgings of unalloyed molybdenum have been produced commercially.
Fundamentally, molybdenum and TZM have proven to be readily forgeable products. According to production forge shops, molybdenum exhibits flow tendencies under impact conditions that are similar to steel; the metal will flow sidewise to “fill” bosses and cavities as readily as steel. Molybdenum alloys have been successfully forged into parts ranging from small blades and fittings to large cones and discs.
