Punching Molybdenum Disc

Many thousands of molybdenum discs for the electronic industry are punched from molybdenum sheet annually.

For successful punching operations the dies must be kept sharp. Clearance depends, of course, upon molybdenum sheet thickness, but clearances should be as small as possible. Most shops aim for a per-side clearance of 5-8% of the stock thickness. With careful procedures and temperature control, molybdenum sheet from 0.127mm thick to 3.81 mm thick is being punched routinely.

Molybdenum discs with 3.125 mm diameter are punched from lighter gages and molybdenum discs whose diameter is larger than 76.2 mm  are punched from gages 0.5mm to 3.8mm on a production basis.

Most punching operations are performed after heating the molybdenum sheet to 95-260 ℃. To keep the molybdenum sheet flat during heating for the punching operation. The high thermal conductivity of molybdenum and its low specific heat afford a rapid rise in temperature, so that molybdenum sheet can be punched in automatic or manual set-up. In general, the thicker the gage of the sheet, the higher should be its temperature prior to punching.
