Tantalum is one light gray metal with slight blue. Due to tantalum has many unique properties, tantalum is able to be widely applied. Therefore, tantalum is known as generalist in the "metal kingdom”.
Tantalum is very hard, the hardness can reach 6 - 6.5. Tantalum has high melting point which is 2996 ℃, next to tungsten and rhenium and ranks the third.

Tantalum has ductility and can be made into filaments or thin foil. The thermal expansion coefficient of tantalum is small. In addition, the toughness of tantalum is very strong, which is more excellent than that of copper.

Tantalum has very good chemical properties and high corrosion resistance. Whether in cold or hot conditions, tantalum has no reaction with hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and "aqua regia". Experiment proves that normally tantalum will have no effects on aqueous alkali, chlorine, bromine water, dilute sulfuric acid and many other medicaments, only respond to hydrofluoric acid and hot sulfuric acid. This situation is relatively rare among the metal.

All of these characteristics of tantalum make the applications of tantalum  very wide. Tantalum can be used to replace the stainless steel in the equipments for producing inorganic acid. The life span of tantalum can be several times more than that of stainless steel.
