Thoriated Tungsten Applications
Thoriated tungsten is used for all cathodes for which the function of thermic emission of electrons is important.
These are cathodes working in a vacuum (e.g. Hot cathodes for amplifier tubes, cathodes for electron welding plants and similar), as well as those working in a gas atmosphere (e.g. Xenon high-pressure lamps for chema projectors and light-houses). In the former case, the addition of thorium oxide causes sufficient electron emission even at moderate temperatures, and in the later case, thoriated cathodes mainly permit easier ignition and more stable burning of the arc.
Thoriated tungsten has further proved its value as an electrode material for plasma welding, plasma cutting and plasma melting, in addition to its function as a cathode and as an anode material for plasma spray guns.
The reduced electron break-out work of thoriated tungsten is also useful for tungsten inert gas welding. If the welding electrode is effective as a cathode in this process, ignition is facilitated by the reduced electron break-out work and more stable burning of the arc is obtained.
The application of thoriated welding electrodes is particularly advantageous if welding is performed with direct current and the welding electrode is the negative pole. The advantages of thoriated electrodes are not quite so great in alternating current welding, as the electrode is only effective as the cathode at certain times. In welding light alloys with direct current, thoriated electrodes offer no particular advantages.
