Tungsten Switches and Contacts
Due to its great resistance to mechanical wear and spark erosion, tungsten is a suitable contact material for switches with high operation frequency, for example contacts for car horns, ignition contact breakers, voltage regulators for automotive generators, etc.
Compound materials of tungsten with copper or silver combine the high burn-off and wear resistance of tungsten with the excellent electrical conductivity of copper and silver. Hence, tungsten-copper and tungsten-silver composites are used as contact materials for high voltage switches.
Tungsten pins are used as current leads and contacts in mercury switches.
In wire spark erosion machines, tungsten is used not only as a guide and contact material for the wire electrodes, but also as a high quality erosion wire.
