Tungsten Welding
Tungsten is a difficult-to-weld metal. Because recrystallization always occurs during the welding operation so that the weld and the metal adjacent to it become coarse-grained and low in strength.
When welding cannot e avoided, the welds should be located in regions of low stress. It is also recommended that welds on edges or ends of structural parts should be avoided.
The parts to be welded should be clean and the areas around the welds should be ground the pickled with acid prior to welding. The parts prepared should not contain cracks or broken edges. Square butt joints are commonly used while butt joints with raised edges are not recommended.
TIG-welding in dry-boxes with a protective atmosphere is possible, but electron beam welding with its small melting and heating zones is preferable.
It is recommended to preheat the parts to be joined to 700-800 ℃ prior to welding by means of defocussed electron beams. Welded parts should be allowed to cool very slowly. Electron beam welding of tungsten with tungsten-rhenium alloys, molybdenum-rhenium alloys, copper, nickel and stainless steel is also possible.
Tungsten-rhenium alloys are recommended as filler metals for tungsten welding.
Tungsten wires and small tungsten parts can be spot welded with iron-nickel-cobalt glass-metal seals in flushed, protective atmosphere.
