Vibration damping tungsten alloys for tool shanks Precision
Precision internal machining today is almost exclusively carried out by tools with shanks of different shapes tipped with hard metal tips or with diamond grinding wheels.
The mechanical properties of the tool shanks can be of the machined surfaces and the life time of the cutting tips or the grinding wheels. Tools with long shanks and with cross sections as small as possible, I.e. with large ”tool overhangs” are often used for machining deep bores. Large tool overhangs, the nature of the metals to be machined and other influences can cause vibrations in the tool shanks resulting in undesirable “chattering” of the tools.
Highest precision and best surface finish, combined with long tool life, are obtained by tools which have very vibration-damping shanks. DEMSIMET W and DENSIMET WS are two tungsten alloys which come closest to these requirements. Thanks to their high densities and special structures both alloys possess a high modulus of elasticity, a high bending strength . Two further advantages of EDNSIMET W and DENSIMET WS has are easy to machine. DENSIMET WS has the same vibration-damping qualities strength, a higher elongation and a greater hardness than the latter.
